Success Outside of the League
It was encouraging to see a lot of the new players get involved in various local and regional tournaments. The following are some notable local, regional and national accomplishments by Platform Tennis League players during the 2013-14 season:
Rob Bakker – had his most successful year yet, pairing with Flip Goodspeed to finish the season #10 in the national rankings. They won the Indianapolis National Ranking Tournament and made the semifinals of the APTA National Tournament. They also won the Midwesterns 90s and finished 9th in both the Chicago Charities and Midwesterns. In all, they lost only 3 matches all season to the numbers 1, 2 & 7 teams. Rob also won the city mixed, finished 2nd in the Columbus Open with Eric Miller and played Presidents Cup for Region IV.
Doug Jones & Thaddeus Reed – finished the year ranked #33 nationally and played Presidents Cup for Region IV. Jones won the Chicago Charities 90s with Miller. Reed won the Hertzel Cup (City) with Rusty Schubert.
Brian Mitchell & Vince Prop – were runners-up in the APTA National 55s and won the GCPTA’s flight 1 city tournament.
Eric Toth – made the semifinals in the Pittsburgh National Ranking Tournament with Bakker and finished 6th in the Midwesterns with Tony Jagodzinski.
Seth Dimling & Ryan Floth – finished the year ranked #67 nationally.
Ken Palmer & Ron Visscher – won the Midwesterns 110s.
