Bakker/Fraser Up to #7 w/ Strong Indy Tourney

2/26/2018

PT Leaguers Rob Bakker & Tyler Fraser reached the finals of the Indianapolis Open and moved up to #7 in the APTA's national rankings. They defeated Graham McNerney and Brian Compton (Cincinnati native) 6-4, 7-6 in the semifinals before facing the Indianapolis team of Ryan Baxter and Ricky Heath in the finals. Heath & Baxter (national #9) won the close final 6-3, 5-7, 7-5. Bakker & Fraser solidified a top 8 seed for the upcoming APTA Nationals. This was the sixth ranking tournament they have played together this year (Boston, Chicago, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Long Island & Cincinnati), finishing in the top 9 in every tournament & winning the Midwesterns. Fraser has also played three additional tournaments (Philadelphia, Hinsdale and Cleveland) with Paulo Gonzalez (Chicago) and is ranked #15 with him. Other PT Leaguers participating in Indy were: Scott Triplett, Pat Gilligan & Luke White, Tony Teufel & Mark Kebe, Scott Estes & Bob Spencer and Kyle Bates. Triplett and partner Edwin Lewis nearly pulled the upset of the tournament losing 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 in the round of 32 to #4 seeds McNerney & Compton.

Hertzel Cup Is Next Week

2/24/2018

Saturday, March 3
The 2018 Hertzel Cup is next Saturday - March 3. It is a single-day event and lasts from about 8am to 7pm. Though most of the top players in the city play, the field includes a wide range. The tournament is suitable for all local competitive players - players above 600 points in PT League (see current league standings), court #1 D2 GCPTA & higher men and regional tournament level women should have several competitive matches.
42 teams - Capacity 48
42 teams are registered and 48 can be accepted. Click for a complete list of teams entered or more registration information.

3 Matches Guaranteed
For those unfamiliar with how platform tennis tournaments work, here is an explanation of why they are competitively conducive for more than just the title contenders. First, all teams are guaranteed at least three matches. Everyone starts in the main draw with an opportunity to win the championship. The top 16 teams are seeded and spaced out evenly in the draw. If you are not one of these, you will play a top 16 team in either your first or second match. So in a 48-team draw, there will be 32 teams that lose either their first or second match. If the tournament was seeded correctly, these should be the 32 weakest teams. These 32 teams now play a new tournament for 17th place. The 16 losers of first round consolation matches form yet another new bracket and play off for 33rd place. There are also "reprieve" tournaments for round of 16 losers (a playoff for 9th) and quarterfinal losers (a playoff for 5th). Tournaments are designed to create compatible competition for most of the teams entered, not just the top few.

Best Day in PT - Only $50
The event includes lunch & several gathering situations throughout the day. It is clearly the most fun day of local PT. The event is only $50 and is a fund raiser for several charities.
