Fraser/Lonergan Hertzel Cup Champs

3/8/2018

PT Leaguers Tyler Fraser and Lee Lonergan are the 2018 Hertzel Cup Champions. Seeded #1, the pair cruised through their early round matches before facing the unseeded team of Ben Hall and Luke White in the quarterfinals. In an entertaining matchup of contrasting styles, Hall/White were unable to slow down the offense, succumbing 6-1, 6-0. Fraser and Lonergan faced the experienced team of Brad Pierce and Thaddeus Reed in the semifinal. The #4 seeds proved to be the day's toughest challengers. Reed/Pierce were able to dictate a slow pace, extending most of the points. The #1 seeds maintained their composure on the big points and won 6-4, 6-4. Their finals opponent was the #7 seeded team of Brian Mitchell and Rusty Schubert. Mitchell/Schubert won their quarterfinal against #2 seeds Rob Bakker and Josh Guttman (5-5 retired due to injury) and their semifinal against #6 seeds Ryan Floth and Michael Todd 6-3, 7-5. The finals pitted two teams of similar playing style but dissimilar age. Fraser and Lonergan (combined age 56) proved to be way too much for Mitchell and Schubert (combined age 119) in the fifth match of the day. Kudos to Mitchell and Schubert for an impressive run and for an entertaining final. The title is the third straight for Fraser (2016 with Rob Bakker, 2017 with Luke White) and Lonergan's first.
